Fly IFR with Confidence

Other Book Like This!
Rod Machado's Instrument Pilot's Survival Manual is written to answer the instrument pilot's most important and frequently unanswered questions. For the cost of about an hour's worth of dual instruction, you will find answers to the following questions:

How do I know if a cloud contains a thunderstorm?
How can I use Center and Approach radar to avoid ice and convective activity?
Is there a good way to estimate visibility while at DH or MDA?
Can I increase the efficiency of my scan and reduce my cockpit workload?
How do I interpret and use all those symbols on approach charts?
How do I interpret GPS approach charts?
What's the best way to fly GPS approaches?
How GPS approaches are built differently from regular instrument approaches and why you need to know about it
And much, much more

Illustrated with humorous drawings and containing some of the most spectacular reports of pilots gripped by the problems of instrument flight, Rod's manual is sure to educate and entertain you. Written in a humorous style, this 424 page (50 pages in color) book will prepare you to be a more educated and proficient pilot. Excellent for any IFR student, experienced professional pilot or as an IFR refresher.
Best book I have ever read. It answers the questions that, if you were smart enough, you would ask. Only book I would ever read twice. If more people would read Rod’s book, the IFR system would run much more smoothly.

Rod Machado’s Instrument Pilot’s Survival Manual is graduate-level study best suited to pilots who’ve earned their instrument rating (or nearly so) and are about to go into info-shock when they realize how little they know. To date we’ve seen perhaps a half-dozen must-haves for the IFR pilot’s bookshelf and we recommend adding this to the list.

Editor, IFR Magazine

The IFR Big Picture made easy. I like Rod Machado’s Instrument Pilot’s Survival Manual because his book describes the techniques, procedures and more importantly, the reasoning behind them. Learning to fly on instruments is so detail oriented that for many getting the big picture only happens just before the checkride. But we learn better when we can understand the purpose behind doing something. If you are learning to fly on instruments or you are already instrument rated and want to gain more insights about instrument flying and weather, Machado’s book is the one to buy.

It’s a ball to read. After seeing most of the IFR texts available, I’d strongly recommend this book to anyone considering initial or brush-up on instrument training.

Senior Editor, Plane & Pilot
